Drummers Of The 2018 Monterey Jazz Festival

PHOTOS BY NICOLAS GRIZZLE

The Monterey Jazz Festival entered its 61st year with a wide variety of artists scheduled to appeal lovers of all forms of jazz. There was your straight-up jazz in trio form with Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and others; world flavor with groups like Ladama and Bokanté; Big voices like Dianne Reeves and Norah Jones (who had a strict no-photo policy); avant-garde, youthful crossovers like Cameron Graves and Knower; youth groups from local high schools; tribute acts to great players no longer with us; and just about every other type of jazz imaginable. One thing they all had in common: Everyone was a monster player, and was extremely fun to listen to and watch. Check out our photo gallery of Friday and Sunday’s action above.
